Pixelmator Pro Uses AI for Enhanced Image Resolution

The Pixelmator Team announces update to Pixelmator Pro, the award-winning Mac image editor designed to make powerful professional tools accessible to users. The update adds a new ML Super Resolution feature, giving users the ability to increase the resolution of images using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques.

“Machine learning has been the most exciting technology in image editing over the past few years and we’ve taken full advantage of it with a number of ML-powered features,” said Saulius Dailide, one of the founders of the Pixelmator Team. “And thanks to the new ML Super Resolution feature, users can now increase the resolution of any image with a click while preserving its quality, which simply wouldn’t be possible without AI.”

ML Super Resolution is integrated using Core ML 3 and is the first tool of its kind widely available to consumers. Using cutting-edge machine learning techniques, it increases the resolution of images – whether photos, illustrations, paintings, or designs – while preserving textures, edges, and other details. ML Super Resolution also removes image noise and compression artifacts during the upscaling process, delivering incredible quality.

Advances in Mac graphics processor performance and multi-GPU support in Core ML 3 make these groundbreaking technologies available to everyday users. To upscale an image, ML Super Resolution creates a representation of it that is over 100 channels deep, detecting features such as edges, patterns, textures, gradients, and colors. The channels are then upscaled separately and combined back into an image. This all happens in under a second on the latest hardware, while on devices from just 5 years ago, the same action can take over a minute. Performance increases are especially notable – up to 200x – on Mac computers with multiple GPUs or AMD Navi eGPUs.

Pixelmator Pro 1.5.4 also brings improvements to ML Denoise, the AI-powered camera noise and image compression artifact removal tool. With the latest round of improvements, ML Denoise is between 2-4 times better at analyzing and removing image noise.

TappyTaps Introduces Barkio for Pet Owners to Monitor Their Dogs

TappyTaps introduces Barkio 1.0, a multiplatform dog monitoring app for phones, tablets, and computers. Barkio allows anyone to watch, listen and interact with their dog remotely, without the need for special hardware. The app was especially prepared with a focus to solve dog’s separation anxiety. With live audio and video, dog owners can see and hear everything that their pets are doing, and interact with them remotely. Barkio turns any two phones, tablets, or laptops into a smart dog monitor and proves to be a helpful tool when dealing with dog separation anxiety.

HD video monitoring – With live video feed, pet owners can check what their dogs are up to. The video transmission works on any network, including WiFi and cellular data.

Sound monitoring – Barkio is triggered every time a noise is captured. The app offers five different levels of microphone sensitivity to make sure the pet owner never misses a single bark.

Remote interaction – Thanks to Barkio, the pet owners have a chance to communicate with their dogs remotely. They can talk to the dog directly through the microphone feature or by pre-recording short voice messages and playing them to the dog when needed. Talking to the dog helps to calm it down when the dog is nervous, anxious, or disobeying.

Custom commands – Record custom voice messages such as Stop, Sit, or Stay and send them to your dog remotely whenever you need. Commands come in handy when the pet owner needs to calm the dog, but can’t talk at the moment.

Two-way video – When talking to the dog, pet parents may use the “Face” feature to stream a video of themselves to the dog. Some dogs proved to react better when hearing and seeing their owners at the same time.

Multiplatform app – Barkio is available for multiplatform usage among iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux. Covering all these platforms, we hope to offer unlimited monitoring options to pet parents all around the world.

All family members can join monitoring – Barkio is tied to a Family Account, which means multiple family members can use Barkio and join the monitoring of their dogs.

Activity log – Pet owners will never miss a single bark with a timestamp from all monitorings. Activity log records all noises so the pet owner can check at any time to find out what’s been going on. The activity log helps to understand dog behavior patterns and discover any problems.

Smart notifications – Barkio keeps the customers notified in every situation. The app will send notifications when the dog is noisy or resting, with recorded noise for the pet owner to listen to.

Power saving background mode – When using the app on the background, Barkio switches to a power-saving mode which informs the pet owners about their dogs through notifications. The audio and video are not transmitted, which saves the battery and lets the pet owners enjoy other apps.

A helpful tool for separation anxiety – Separation anxiety affects dogs of all breeds and ages. Barkio helps to detect separation anxiety as it allows the pet owners to see how the dog behaves when it’s alone. Barkio also helps with solitude training to help the dog feel comfortable when being alone.

iOS and Android versions are available worldwide exclusively through the App Store and Google Play. Mac, Windows and Linux versions are available to download directly from Barkio online. Barkio costs $19.99 (USD) / year or $2.99 / month for up to 10 devices.

Camera Guard Blocks Hackers from the Webcam and Microphone on Your Mac

ProtectStar Inc. today is pleased to announce the release and immediate availabilty of Camera Guard Professional 2017, the company’s new safety software solution for macOS. Camera Guard Professional ensures that no hacker, spy or malware can observe you or listen in on you. With just one single click, not only the camera, but also the microphone will be completely protected.

The app brings back privacy at the work place and in the children’s room at home with a single click. It is an uncompromising, unprecedented solution, specifically protecting the webcam and microphone of iMacs and MacBooks.

When Camera Guard is installed, a single click is enough in order to secure the camera and microphone. This safety tool from then on reports all applications and processes that try to gain access to the camera and microphone. The user then decides if they wish to allow access to the eyes and ears of the Mac Computer. Or alternatively, not allow access. All accesses and warnings are protocolled in a log file.

The personal settings of the Camera Guard are also protected by a PIN number which is equipped with special hacker protection in order to prevent the software itself from being manipulated.

At the core of Camera Guard is the intelligent Deep Detective. This detective not only recognizes well known malware (for example the Backdoor.MAC.Eleanor, which specifically takes over the control of the integrated webcam), it also identifies attacks of previously unknown malware. Just like an alarm system or personal firewall, all attacks from hackers, spies and trojans are detected and blocked using heuristic methods. At the same time the software uses minimal system resources.

Camera Guard Professional 2017 offers protection of the microphone, the Deep Detective, protection against well-known and unknown access attempts, a protocol in a log file, password protection and a 24/7 support via email. The pro-version costs just $29.90 (USD). There is also a free version of Camera Guard available that offers protection of the webcam and safety information over accesses.

Review: Spectra – Camera Painting: Complete Paintings With Your iPhone’s Camera

There are a number of unique games available for iOS devices these days, endless runners, puzzle games, Pokemon, and more fill the screens of the devices around us. I was given the opportunity to try Spectra – Camera Painting, a new game that offers puzzle fans, and even Pokemon players, a unique challenge.

Review: Spectra - Camera Painting Complete Paintings With Your iPhone's Camera

Overview

The concept of Spectra – Camera Painting is simple. Select an image from the game’s library of 8 images, (you get 8 free, you can buy more later, if you’d like), and then point your iPhone’s camera at real life objects in the world around you to match the colors found in the images to completely “paint” the illustration.

While the concept is simple, finding just the right color to match the colors found in the image can be frustrating, yet entertaining. Any object around you is fair game for use in the game.

Point your camera at objects containing the color selected on screen, and when you match the color, you hear a click, and a check mark appears, marking that color as found. That piece of the image fills in on screen, and it’s onto another object to match a new color from the image. If you like, you can tap any on-screen color to select it as the color to search for.

The game also allows users of iOS devices that include a flash to use it as a flashlight, aiding in finding just the right color anywhere in any lighting condition. You can also pinch to zoom, to fill the lens with the correct color.

I found the game to be an enjoyable time passer, particularly when I was waiting in line, or sitting in my dentist’s office waiting for my appointment. I did get a few odd looks from those around me, but once I explained what I was doing, they seemed to accept it. (A few even asked me for the name of the game.)

While the free app only offers 8 illustrations to begin play with, it does offer 3 levels of challenge, so most players will get hours of fun from the first batch of images before needing to consider the in-app purchase of additional illustrations.

When it comes time to buy additional images, they are available in packs ranging in price from $0.99 to $3.99. Available Painting Packs include:

  • Abstract
  • Art Nouveau
  • Cakes
  • Cartoons
  • Cubist
  • Folk Art
  • Futurism
  • Graffiti
  • Impressionist
  • Natural World
  • People
  • Pets
  • Pointillist
  • Pop Art
  • Sport
  • Surrealist
  • Transport
  • Travel Art
  • Wildlife

I would like to see a feature that allows users to select images from their own camera rolls as the source image, but I could see how it might lead to frustration and complaints if the player selected a photo containing an overload of colors that would be difficult to match.

Verdict

Spectra – Camera Painting is an enjoyable game for the iPhone and iPad. I found it to be a great time waster in situations where I was waiting on someone or something. Plus, it makes a great way to unwind in the evening after work.

While I wish the app included more images, (without an in-app purchase), or allowed you to use your own images, the game offers enough playability (with three skill levels), that an occasional in-app purchase for more images really isn’t a big deal.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Price: FREE – Available in the App Store. In-app purchases are available, ranging from $0.99 to $3.99, that allow players to purchases new images, in a number of categories, if they so desire. [GET THE GAME HERE]

Pros:

  • Unique color matching challenge
  • Easy to learn
  • Three levels of challenge

Cons:

  • I wish the game allowed players to use their own images
